The two legal connection routes (and what they cost you)

- Hard-wired route (available now): A qualified electrician connects the system to your consumer unit under BS 7671, and it's notified to your DNO under G98. This works for any kit, including battery-equipped ones, but adds the electrician's fee to your total.
- Plug-and-socket route (from 27 August 2026): Under UKSI 2026/848, a complete, manufacturer-supplied "plug-in microgenerator" product — capped at 800W and excluding any built-in battery storage — can connect via a standard plug and socket once it's certified against the Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification. This removes the electrician cost entirely, but only for panels-only kits that carry the right certification — not every existing 800W product will automatically qualify.

Marketing materials often quote sunny-day output. Real payback depends on your city's actual solar irradiance. Using PVGIS (the EU's solar radiation database) for a typical 800Wp system, south-facing at a 30° tilt, here's what an average year actually generates:

- 0% VAT relief: currently applies to qualifying energy-saving materials, but only when they're both supplied and installed by the same installer under one contract. Buy the panels yourself and hire an electrician separately, and the parts don't automatically qualify for the relief. This VAT holiday is due to end 31 March 2027.
- ECO4 scheme: extended to 31 December 2026, but this targets fuel-poor and vulnerable households specifically — it isn't a general cashback scheme, so most buyers won't qualify.
Given these caveats, most DIY-minded buyers end up paying full price and full VAT on hardware bought separately — factor that into your budget rather than assuming a blanket discount applies.
